The rapid integration of the new methods has somewhat disrupted the way of doing things and is causing a new layout of the building. But this new, more technical approach to architecture does not please everyone. We can, therefore, conclude that it is from this moment that the modern movement in architecture splits into two opposite currents. Functionalism, which will often be called the International Style, and the organic stream. These two ways of building will react in a very different way to the new technicality of the architecture. Functionalism, more widespread, adopts a more frank and functional attitude towards the material, using modern materials in their raw essences and appreciating them for their strength and their resistance.
The organic movement, for its part, seeks a link with nature where modern properties are put to use but integrated into the architecture in a more subtle way. The functionalist movement will take on an enormous scale in the architectural avant-garde since it highlights the first qualities of new materials by presenting them without embellishment. The avant-gardes generally reject all that concerns historicism in architecture. The only way to do this is to strip it of historical references and to use what modernity brings
Philippe Boudon, in his work Introduction to Architecturology, raises a reflection on the functionalist movement and the goal of architecture. Without denying that architecture is an art, we can ask ourselves if it is not meant to behold only on the side of art, only as an art. And, is it not, before being an art, a doing. Here, Boudon questions the first quality of architecture. According to him, this one can only take the function of dwelling, of building, and not a decorative aspect. Material modernity thus brings another way of looking at architecture, appreciating from now on its functional character. The design of the architecture changes dramatically.
