Glass has the function of opening the walls, granting an increased circulation of the light, and thus the look. The property of functionalism allows the building to represent only what it is, without embellishment. These new physical characteristics allow it to be an object in itself of the urban space. It is therefore essential to leave everything that is excess (decoration) out of the modern architectural design so that the attention is more directly on the structure, the raw materials, and their dialogue with the urban environment. H.P. Berlage, during the construction of the Stock Exchange in Amsterdam, completed in 1903, realizes a sober and contained building; no excess is allowed. He explains that the essential role of masonry must be tempered: The art of the master builder is the creation of space and not the drawing of the facades. The aesthetic aspect of the building gives way to the creation of space. This notion of space will be more and more present with the arrival of the new century.
Since the mid-19th century Industrial Revolution, the arts and architecture have been growing at a fast pace in Europe. Very often, when one reflects on architectural modernity, one thinks of the old. The names of famous architects such as Peter Behrens and Auguste Perret are the first to resonate. However, we tend to forget that the architectural revolution also takes place on the other side of the ocean, in the United States. Essential for modern architecture, the United States will be the first country to stand out from Europe. One of the greatest US representatives is Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959). Designer and architect, he is certainly one of the first builders who give the nobility to modern construction in the United States.
