France is undeniably one of the cradles of modern architecture. The motherland of reinforced concrete, the Republic develops an architectural language that will be it's own. This new technique alone provokes an explosion of architectural projects more innovative than the others on the French territory. One of the first major programs of the early 20th century is the Industrial City of Tony Garnier . Combining architecture and town planning, the project offers many ideas that will be widely used in the new way of building in the years that follow. Conceiving his city, Garnier reflects on two important elements; on the one hand to the building materials that he will use and on the other hand to the layout of the houses in order to organize them properly in their urban ensemble. Everything is calculated to the centimeter, all guided by a strong social conscience. Garnier's initial goal was to use concrete for the construction of his homes. However, this material was not yet widely used for residential.

The first use of this material in a residential building will be that of Auguste Perret,  in 1903. The building built at 25 bis of Franklin Street in Paris will be a big step forward in architectural modernity since the complete frame of the building is made of reinforced concrete. And Perret does not hide it, he emphasizes it. This Parisian building had an immense influence on one of the geniuses of French architectural modernity, Charles-Édouard Jeanneret.

Commonly called Le Corbusier, the young architect of Swiss origin took classes between 1909 and 1910 in Perret's studio. However, the teaching of his master was not up to the architectural change that Corbusier wanted. Having more ideas, he went to work in Germany for the prestigious cabinet of the architect Peter Behrens. During the five months, he will be at Behrens' cabinet, Le Corbusier will not have the chance to work either with Walter Gropius or with Mies van der Rohe. At the moment when Le Corbusier arrived at his German master's house, Gropius was already on the site of the Fagus Works in Alfeld-sur-Leine. Mies van der Rohe, arrives for his part, a few months after the departure of Le Corbusier. While working in Berlin, the French architect adopted many works of German architects and is particularly influenced by the advances proposed by the Deutscher Werkbund. At that time, the German group is just starting to work on a concept of standardization of construction.
