Architectural project first proposed to Peter Behrens, an unstable economic circumstance makes the wind turn in favor of the young architect Walter Gropius. The moment he leaves Behrens' cabinet, he will be given the chance of a career. Gropius left the milieu where he had started his career for a unique purpose: he wanted to develop an architectural language of his own, turned towards modernity. Accompanied by his collaborator Adolf Meyer, Gropius began work on the Fagus factories in 1910.
Two of the representative elements of the Fagus plant are most certainly the non-load bearing glass facade and its steel structure. Numerous plastic features make this facade the distinctive element of the building. In his book Space, Time, Architecture, the historian Siegfried Giedion elaborates on this factory which is, according to him, the revelation of a new architectural language: Behrens had erected monumental walls on the right and left of the glass wall from its famous turbines hall
At Gropius, these monumental walls have disappeared. It can be seen now that the wall no longer has any bearing function, but that it is a simple coating and protection against bad weather. At Behrens' AEG plant, concrete walls form the corners of the plant. At Gropius, the concrete supports have completely disappeared. Concrete in the Gropius structure is only used to finish the glass wall. The young architect speaks of his facade built in Alfeld: "The role of the wall, which rises against the pillars, is now limited to forming a screen against rain, cold and noise.
