The political, economic and artistic turning points provided a favorable context for the first manifestations of Expressionist architecture, especially in Germany, where the utopian character of Expressionism found a strong resonance in the rather left-wing artistic community eager to offer after the First World War, an answer to his torments. The German defeat, the departure of the Kaiser, the turpitude and the rise of social democracy, and the optimism engendered by the Weimar Republic caused some of the architects to be reluctant to pursue their projects initiated before the war and allowed themselves to look for new solutions. An influential part of the artistic community, including architects, sought a revolution similar to that taking place in Russia. The grandiose and expensive reconstruction of the Großes Schauspielhaus was rather a reminiscence of the imperial past than a planned project in the war economy and then in the midst of the post-war depression.

Artistic movements that preceded Expressionist architecture and continued with some intertwining were the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements (or Jugendstil in Germany). The fusion of designers and artisans was a major concern of the Arts & Crafts movement, which continued in Expressionist architecture. The recurring subject of naturalism in Art Nouveau, which was also prevalent in Romanticism, also continued but took a more mineral than vegetal side. The naturalist Ernst Haeckel was known to find his sources of inspiration in natural forms.
Futuristic architecture and the constructivist architectural movement, as well as the nihilo-artistic Dada movement, came into competition with expressionism and often with very similar forms and productions. Bruno Taut's magazine, Frühlicht, contained constructivist projects such as Vladimir Tatlin's Monument to the Third International. Futurism and constructivism, however, glorified the mechanical aspects and were concerned with urbanism,  which will not be explored in Germany before the Neue Sachlichkeit movement. Mendelsohn is an exception here, whose work was very close to futurism and constructivism.
