The form played a primordial role in what distinguished the Expressionist architecture of these immediate predecessors, Art Nouveau or Jugendstil. Henry Van de Velde was able to strip his buildings of any ornament and, like others at the time, turn to formal concepts of individualism and symbolic representations. While the Art Nouveau accorded some liberties with its organic ornamentation, Expressionist architecture strove to free the form of the whole building rather than just a few parts. Examples of this are found in the paper projects of the movement as well as in the built work. Hermann Finsterlin's Formspiels depicts the shape of buildings transformed into organic and anamorphic masses. The Alpine architecture of Bruno Taut illustrates the luminescent structures whose entire envelope is changed into a crystalline form. An example of a formally intense Expressionist project is Erich Mendelsohn's Einstein Tower. This sculptural building shows geometry under a relativistic and revolutionary perspective. Stripped of any ornamentation affixed, the form and space are modeled in a fluid way to express concepts of the architect as well as those from whom the skyscraper takes its name. Mendelsohn had a deep sense of form, shown by the Einstein skyscraper, but also by his many drawings.

Since expressionist architecture used curved geometries, a recurrent form of this movement is the dome. The interior of the Großes Schauspielhaus was concave. Hermann Finsterlin's Formspliels have asymmetric anthropomorphic domes. Many of Bruno Taut's works are also rounded, like the glass pavilion and the Käseglocke (cheese bell) of Worpswede. Taut's Alpine architecture has the eccentric charm of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Kubla Khan dome-shaped pleasure palaces. Curved architecture requires a curved roof, the roofs of Expressionist architecture are often domes. Another expressionist motif was the accentuation of horizontal or vertical, for dramatic effects, influenced in this by new technical objects such as ships or skyscrapers.
