Pac-Man is an arcade video game developed by the Japanese company Namco and released in 1980. The player's task is to control all the points in the maze while managing Pacman, avoiding encounters with ghosts that are chasing the hero. With an increase in the level of the game, only its complexity changes, the architecture of the labyrinth remains identical. There are 256 levels in the game, the last of which cannot be completed due to an overflow error.

In the late 1970s, due to the success of Space Invaders, the video game market focused on creating arcade jokes and attracted a purely male audience. Namco employee Toru Ivatani wanted to make a game that everyone would like, especially girls and chose food as the main theme of his work. In Japan, the game created was called Puck-Man (Jap. Ку ッ ク マ ン pakkuman), but when localized in the United States, Midway changed the name to Pac-Man, believing that with the original name the children could paint the middle of the letter “P”, turning it into “ F ”, and make the word obscene.

After the release in Japan, the game was well received but did not become popular. In America, the audience was impressed by the absence of a violent motive in the arcade, which attracted, among other things, the female audience and helped earn the loyalty of parents to the video game. All this ensured the popularity of Pac-Man among people of different ages and professions, creating an increased interest in the game and making Pacman the first video game star. This success inspired developers to create more diverse games, including those with no violence.

Due to its popularity, the game was ported and reprinted on many platforms, among which the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man was particularly famous. Because of its poor quality, it became one of the symbols of the 1983 video game crisis. Pac-Man has given rise to a series of games of the same name, in which many sequels have been launched on various platforms, including arcade machines, home gaming systems, computers, and mobile phones. In addition, there were many clones, imitations and illegal copies of the game.
