The kidneys are the main organs of the human urinary system. They are responsible for the excretion of waste substances through the urine and have other important functions, including the regulation of the internal environment of the body ( homeostasis ), controlling the volume of extracellular fluids, the osmolarity of blood plasma, the balance of electrolytes and the pH of the internal environment. The kidney also makes hormones such as erythropoietin that regulates the production of red blood cells and the renin that regulates the blood pressure. The kidneys are even organs shaped like a bean or kidney bean. In humans, they are located in the posterior part of the abdomen on both sides of the spine, each kidney measuring 12 cm long and 6 cm wide. It weighs between 150 and 170 grams in an average adult. The absence of kidneys or their lack of functioning is incompatible with life, therefore patients with severe renal impairment require the use of dialysis procedures ( artificial kidney ) or a kidney transplant to continue with life.

The kidneys in the human being are located in the back of the abdomen. There are two, one on each side of the spine. The right kidney rests behind the liver and the left kidney below the diaphragm and adjacent to the spleen, separated from these organs by the posterior parietal peritoneum. On each kidney, there is an adrenal gland. The asymmetry within the abdominal cavity caused by the liver results in the right kidney being slightly lower than the left. The kidneys are located behind the peritoneum, in the retroperitoneum, they are located between the last thoracic vertebra, and the first three lumbar vertebrae (from T12 to L3). 3 The upper poles of the kidneys are partially protected by ribs 11 and 12. Each kidney is surrounded by two layers of fat (perirenal and pararenal) that help protect them.

Kidneys are two bean-shaped organs about 11 centimetres (4.3 in) in length found on the left and right in the retroperitoneal space between the parietal peritoneum and the posterior abdominal wall, well protected by muscle, fat, and ribs. The kidneys are well vascularized, receiving about 25 percent of the cardiac output at rest. Kidneys are bilateral bean-shaped organ in reddish-brown color whose main work is to filter and throw out waste products from the body and also helps to maintain the balance of electrolytes, acid-base, and fluid in the blood in our body.

The left kidney is located at about the T12 to L3 vertebrae, whereas the right is lower due to slight displacement by the liver. Each kidney weighs about 125–175 g in males and 115–155 g in females. Each kidney is 12 cm long and 6 cm wide and has weighs between 150 and 170 grams in an average adult. The main function of kidney is to excrete metabolic waste and excess electrolytes in the form of urine. Every minute 1300 mL of blood enter the kidneys; 1299 ml leave the kidney while 1 ml leaves as urine. The kidneys are the major organs that maintain homeostasis (balance of the various body functions) in the body and help control blood pressure.

Kidney Anatomy

 Renal Capsule – outer membrane that surrounds the kidney; it is thin but tough and fibrous

 Renal Pelvis – basin-like area that collects urine from the nephrons, it narrows into the upper end of the ureter

 Calyx – extension of the renal pelvis; they channel urine from the pyramids to the renal pelvis

 Cortex – the outer region of the kidney; extensions of the cortical tissue, contains about one million blood filtering nephrons

 Nephron – these are the filtration units in the kidneys

 Medulla – inner region of the kidney contains 8-12 renal pyramids. The pyramids empty into the calyx.

 Medullary pyramids – formed by the collecting ducts, inner part of the kidney

 Ureter – collects filtrate and urine from renal pelvis and takes it to the bladder for urination

 Renal Artery – branches off of the aorta bringing waste-filled blood into the kidney for filtering in the nephrons; the renal artery is further subdivided into several branches inside the kidney. Each minute, the kidneys receive 20% of the blood pumped by the heart. Some arteries nourish the kidney cells themselves.

 Renal Vein – removes the filtered blood from the kidneys to the inferior vena cava

At FlatPyramid, we have designed a Realistic 3D model of a Kidney anatomy based on Real-world scale and exact proportions. This model can also be used for a variety of purposes such as drawing, animated movies, projects, educational intent, filmmaking, and much more.
