A stadium (from the Latin stadĭum, and this one from the Greek στάδιον stádion 1 ) is a closed construction with bleachers for the spectators, destined to sports competitions. 1 It can be outdoors or covered.

It is used for various types of sports that are popular worldwide such as football, rugby, baseball, football, tennis, etc. Stadiums can greatly influence the economy of a country hosting all kinds of sporting events depending on the capacity they present. It consists of a large field surrounded by a structure designed so that the spectators can stand or sit watching the event. Since ancient times they have always been part of the daily life of people.

In America it is called "court" (in Quechua: kancha, "enclosure enclosed" ) ? to the playing field that is inside the stadium.

The oldest known stadium in the world is located in Olympia, in Western Peloponnese, Greece, where the Ancient Olympics took place for the first time in 776 BC. C. Initially, it was built for a single event that was athletic events. It presented more or less a distance of approximately 190 meters (or 210 yards ). Rome and Greece were the main civilizations of the West that had notion and knowledge about the stadiums.

Some stadiums have partial roofs, and a few have even been designed to have moveable fields as part of the infrastructure. The Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans is a true dome structure made of a lamellar multi-ringed frame and has a diameter of 680 feet (210 m). It is the largest fixed domed structure in the world.

Although originally and strictly, a stadium should have an athletics track and be capable of hosting competitions of that sport, in the contemporary era, the term stadium has also been applied to any large sports infrastructure with bleachers and central field, even covered.
