Tramway tracks were introduced to provide protective flangeway in the trackwork in the cities. The basic idea of tramways was to run light rail operations within the cities. The significance of tram rails is by its characteristics of placing it on several surfaces. For instance, standard rails, grooved rails, concrete sleepers into street surfaces for street running. One of the disadvantages a tram has it was a risk for running cyclists in the cities. Later on to overcome this problem the tramway lay on the grass turf surfaces with an environmentally friendly or ecologically friend perspective. It was later known as a grassed track.

Tramways were introduced in the 16th century. They were made up of wood, which was later on replaced by iron and steel in the 18th century. The first street tramways were laid in 1832 in New York City by john stepsons to assist horses pulling bushes on dirt roads when the roads get muddy from the rainy season.

This way a horse was also able to pull 10 tones of goods as comparative to 1 ton on the dirt road. The idea was later used by mechanical powered vehicles like tram-trains.
