The A319 accommodates up to 160 passengers and is able to cover a distance of 3,700 nm (6,900 km; 4,300 mi). The final assembly of the aircraft is carried out in Hamburg, Germany. It is a shorter version of the A320 and put into operation in April 1996 with Swissair, two years after the extended Airbus A321 and eight - after the original A320.
The aircraft has the same pay-per-view rating as the rest of the Airbus A320 family, enabling the A320's respective A320 pilots to operate without additional training or retraining.
As of September 30, 2016, 1456 A319 aircraft were manufactured, of which 1440 operate, and 18 others are completed in solid-state order. EasyJet is the largest operator of the Airbus A319, operating 144 aircraft.

Similarly, the reduced version of the fuselage, the A319neo offers more energy-efficient engines, coupled with improved glider design and new wing fins, named in the Airbus Sharklets. The airline will save up to 15% of fuel. The A319neo is the least popular model of the Airbus A320neo family, having an overall order of only 58 ships as of September 30, 2006, compared to 3,444 - A320neo and 1,310 - A321neo.
