Hot rods are classic old American cars that are packed with larger engines for faster speeds. The term “hot rod” has had various uses in relation to performance cars. The earliest hot rods were old cars which were altered with the model to reduce weights. General modifications were replaced engines with bigger ones, removal of convertible tops, hoods, bumpers and windshield.
After the World War II was over many small military airports were abandoned, that gave a track for drag race to the hot rods. The track was usually 1 mile long, it included 4 lanes for racing simultaneously.
As automobiles offered by the major automakers began increasing performance, the lure of hot rods began to decrease. With the introduction of muscle cars, it was now possible to purchase a high performance car directly from the showroom.
By the 1970s, the 350 cu inches, small block Chevy V8 was the most common choice of engines for hot rods. Another popular engine is the Ford Windsor engine. During 1980s, many car manufacturers were reducing the displacement of their cars, which made it hard for the hot rod builders to obtain large displacement engines. Engine builders had to modify the smaller engines using non-standard crank shafts and pistons to obtain larger displacement.
