Several different types of boats have historically been used as fishing boats for fishing in the sea or on a lake or river. Several conventional fishing boats are still in use today. Traditional fishing vessels included rafts, dugout canoes, reed boats, and boats made from a hide or tree bark frame, such as coracles.
Dugout canoes dating back to the Neolithic Period about 7,000-9,000 years ago are the oldest boats discovered by archeological excavation. Such canoes were often made using simple stone tools from coniferous tree logs.
These early vessels had limited capacity; they were able to float and travel on water, but they were not suitable for use far from the shore. They were mostly used for fishing and hunting. Fishing boats were designed in conjunction with the production of trade- and war-built vessels.
