A hovercraft is a vehicle with air-cushion base, capable of moving on water, ice, mud, land and other surfaces.
Hovercrafts use blowers to produce a large volume of air below the hull that is slightly above atmoshpheric pressure. A British invention in the 1950s to 1960s became the inspiration for the first practical hovercraft. They are now used for specialized transportation in disaster relief, coastguard, miilitary and survey applications. Large versions of the vehicles have been used to carry a large number of people and vehicles across English Channel.
There have been many attempts to understand the principles of high air pressure below hulls and wings. The Shipbuilder Sir John Isaac Thornycroft patented an early design of the hovercraft but suitable and powerful engines were not available until 20th century.
Through improvements over the years, hovercraft became an effective high-speed transport system to be used on land and on water. This led to the widespread developments of miliitary vehicles, search and rescue and commercial operations. By 1962, many UK aviation and shipbuilding firms were working hovercraft designs.
By early 1970s, basic concept of hovercraft had been well developed and it had found a number of niche roles where its combinations of features were advantageous.
To add to the fun, FlatPyramid has a high-resolution 3-D model of hovercraft. The model is to be used in architectural visualizations, animations, movies and games. You can notice the detailing and precision by yourself. We hope thet you like it.
