Leonardos boat with shovels
Designed around 1484-86. An early type of paddleboat. The paddles mean you use energy more efficiently, and can move faster.

Leonardo designed a range of water craft, from floating dredgers, to paddle boats, to semi-submersibles intended for use in times of war. He started his studies by drawing the shapes of fishes rationalizing that nature had designedthese to move smoothly through the water. Here Leonardo illustrates a small boatof a type familiar to children, the hand-cranked paddle boat. The paddles themselves are shovel-shaped and (unlike the oarsman in a rowing boat) the operator can see where he is going. This boat forms a basic design from which Leonardo elaborated.

From 1495-1500 Leonardo’s study shows beyond the thinking of Taccola, Valturio and Francesco di Giorgio among others, all of whom included paddle boats in their military manuscripts. The crank-operated paddle boat shown here is just one of many similar designs to be found in Codex Atlanticus. It had shovel-shaped paddles which were turned by a crank system. Leonardo shows a cross-section of a crank-operated paddle boat, one of a larger number of similar drawings that cover a page of the Codex Atlanticus. The shovel-shaped paddles are turned by an inboard crank connected to which is a large flywheel to ease the dead spots in turning the crank.

The crank-operated paddle boat shown here is just one of many similar designs to be found in Codex Atlanticus. It had shovel-shaped paddles which were turned by a crank system. As the treadles are raised and lowered they operate a belt around a central drum. This, in turn, is geared to toothed wheels which drive the paddle. This is a very practical design really only required the addition of a steering device to be useful. It is considered that this is about as far as Leonardo could go with the technology available to him at the time.
