As a material production, but also as an art with an expressive purpose, architecture has many connections with science and technology. Such reports can be classified under two headings. Architecture is first and foremost a question of scientific and technical know-how and processes directly involved in the design and construction of buildings: resistance of materials, manufacturing processes, and assembly of constructive elements, for example. This first set of knowledge and processes is commonly referred to as the construction term. Construction is an integral part of architecture, as many theorists and practitioners have recalled from age to age.
The relations between the architectural discipline and the scientific and technical context do not stop there. For architecture is in solidarity with culture in the broad sense of the term; the worldview of science and technology, the questions they raise are part of culture. Architecture is often inspired by it, according to extremely variable modalities.
The reference can be straightforward, as in those Baroque buildings that play with light as could the scientists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, by composing or decomposing the rays of the sun, by concentrating or diffusing, in the intention of piercing the secret. Many contemporary projects, on the other hand, maintain more symbolic relationships with the world of signals and flux, waves and particles in which we move today.
Although the links between construction and architecture are always closer than those of the latter with scientific and technical culture, they are equally remarkable. The construction can be staged or hidden; it can come from a logic of the performa.
