Skyscraper Office Building 3D model.
Skyscrapers, since the 1960s, use innovative tubular models created by the US-Bangladeshi structural engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan. This principle of civil engineering makes these buildings structurally more efficient and stronger. It reduces the use of the material (economically much more efficient) while allowing the buildings to reach greater heights. Today, skyscrapers are something increasingly common where land is expensive, as in the centers of large cities, because they provide a high proportion of leasable space per land area. They are built not just for the sake of space, but, like temples and palaces of the past, skyscrapers are considered symbols of the economic power of a city or country. They not only define the horizon but also help define the identity of a city. In some cases, exceptionally tall skyscrapers were built not out of necessity but to help define the identity and power projection of the city where it was built.
The term "skyscraper" was first applied to steel buildings of at least ten floors at the end of the nineteenth century, a result of public astonishment at tall buildings built in large American cities such as Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Detroit and St. Louis.
