Vodka is a strong alcoholic drink, a colorless water-alcohol solution with a characteristic taste and alcohol smell.

The vodka production process includes preparing corrected water, mixing rectified ethyl alcohol from food raw materials with corrected water, treating the water-alcohol solution with activated charcoal or modified starch, filtering it, adding ingredients if required by the recipe, mixing, control filtering, pouring it into consumer packaging and design of finished products.

Before the word “vodka” was circulated in everyday life, the accepted names were: “bread wine”, “hot wine”, “smoked wine”, “green wine”, etc .; but even after the word “vodka” began to appear in official documents, vodka was referred to in the trade statements and state acts depending on the fortress as “hot, plain, table wine”, “pennik”, “half a cup”.

In Polish in 1405 and 1437, the use of the forms “wodko, vodka” was recorded in judicial acts of the Sandomierz Voivodeship (meaning “small reservoir”), in 1534 the word “wodki” was recorded with the meaning “distilled medicinal products”. The original meaning of the Polish “wódka” is “little water”, “vodka”, similar to the meaning of the word “vodka” - “vodka” in the Russian language of the Old Russian period and in other Slavic languages.

Pokhlebkin believed that the Polish "wódka" comes from Russian. In Russian, the name "vodka" was recorded in 1533 as applied to medicinal alcohol tincture of herbs, and in the meaning of alcoholic beverage it began to be used in the 17th century, in the second half of the 17th century it was used by foreigners to designate Russian vodka (before that - "Russian wine ”), and in the XVIII century, entering into official documents.

One of the earliest official Russian documents, in which the word “vodka” is mentioned, is the personal decree of Ivan V and Peter I “On the collection of duties from various wines and vodkas exported from overseas, with yefimki, and with sugar, according to previous decrees,” from 4 (August 14), 1684.

Back in the XVIII century, vodka was primarily understood as vodka, which was given an additional taste, aroma (smell) or color with the help of herbs, berries or fruits. At the same time, colorless and “pure” vodka was still called wine in the 19th century.

The modern understanding of the term “vodka” as purified ethanol diluted in water was entrenched in the 19th century.
