The structure has a very important place in the construction of a skyscraper, because this one, as well as the distribution of the masses and the foundations, will determine the height that the work will be able to reach. In contrast to low-rise buildings that rely on load-bearing walls, towers larger than 40 floors must withstand strong winds at high altitudes, and therefore adopt a frame that supports the weight of the building, on which walls are fixed. There are several structures that can achieve different heights and that meet different constraints.
The central core technique for building a skyscraper is the most used to date. It travels the building over its entire height and is the element ensuring the rigidity of the tower. Inside this one are the water, electricity and the lifts and stairs. The support structure concentrated in the core is constructed of reinforced concrete. From this core are beams that go up to the front of the tower and are intended to support the floor, and to redirect the forces exerted by the wind towards the core. Classic central core skyscrapers can be up to 50 stories tall, 70 by doubling or tripling the base structure.
Only this structure has limits; Indeed, to gain floors and build higher and higher, it is necessary to gradually increase the size of the core, and therefore the area of the base of the skyscraper. The problem is that when the base is very wide, the apartments located just around the core are unmarketable because they are too far from the edge and therefore do not receive outside light. The first benefit of living in a skyscraper is the often impressive sight.
