A skyscraper is an object whose architectural forms are variable with multiple denominations (Hugron, 2007).
Tall buildings do not all have the same status, which affects the "records" that are displayed. The Emporis commercial database distinguishes, on the one hand, the towers and, on the other hand, the skyscrapers. If the towers are probably better known to the general public, they are not strictly speaking buildings. These constructions have most often a precise and unique function, and the majority of them are simply technical towers, notably the television and communication towers like the Eiffel Tower (325 m, Paris), the Oriental Pearl Tower ( 468 m, Shanghai), Fernsehturm (368 m, Berlin) and Ostankino (540 m, Moscow) or CN Tower (553 m, Toronto). These technical constructions have often attracted, over time - sometimes from the beginning - a notable tourist attendance.
For their part, skyscrapers, still according to Emporis, are buildings divided into regular floors. They are multifunctional buildings, which include offices but also hotels, shops, restaurants, and housing. Their construction is more complex than that of towers. The Emporis site, which lists skyscrapers and high-rise buildings, distinguishes them according to the height or, if this is not known, the number of floors. According to this classification, only skyscrapers with a height of more than 100 m or more than 39 floors could claim the title of a skyscraper.
This is, of course, is confusing because in many languages, particularly in French, the term "tower" is used to designate apartment buildings, such as the Super-Italia Tower (1974, 12 m) or Prelude Tower (1979, 123 m), and office buildings (Tour Montparnasse, Zamanski Tower) .
When building a tower or skyscraper, the final height at which the building will rise is often kept secret. It must be said that there are different ways to calculate the height, because it is in a logic of race to the record. Thus, information sheets on towers and skyscrapers often give the heights "with antenna" and "without antenna" since they can add several tens of meters to the building. This is the case of the Eiffel Tower, 300 m at the origin, which has not ceased to graze more height with the installation of new antennas. The 116th floor, installed in 2005, hoisted it to the height of 325 m. Therefore, the most accurate information sheets are used to indicate the height of the top floor, the height of the roof and the height of the antenna.
