The minimalist style of Bauhaus art, architecture, and furniture are based on this functionalist concept and the desire to reconnect with raw materials. Influenced by the modernist movement or De Stijl movement, Bauhaus artists favored straight lines and geometric forms with floral and curvilinear forms. Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus, was the first to apply the notion of "Gesamtkunstwerk", a synthesis of the arts, in modern times.
