Brutalism (from fr. Béton brut - "cement coating without decoration" [1]) is a field in design and architecture using simple geometric shapes of unadorned concrete. It originated in the middle of the XX century and gained its greatest development in the 1970s.

History
It originated in the mid-1950s in the United Kingdom and is associated with the names of architects Alison and Peter Smithson, the authors of the term formed from the French expression "Beton brut" - "raw concrete". Brutalist architects in every way emphasized the rough texture of concrete, which they did not consider necessary to conceal with plaster, cladding, or painting. They preferred deliberately heavy, monotonous, rectilinear forms ("box houses"). Brutalism was most widespread in the United Kingdom (especially in the 1960s and 1970s) and in the USSR (especially in the 1980s). the first postwar years), but also the uncompromising anti-bourgeoisie and "honesty" of this style.
