Digital printers are non-impact printers; they fire drops of ink from the printing heads onto the substrate. They are frequently mistakenly referred to as being “Digital Printing Presses”. The term Printing Press refers to the nature of the process, in which there is contact between the systems that applies the ink to the substrate that the ink is pressed onto.

There are several categories of the digital printer. The high volume systems print at speeds measured at between 200 and 400 square meters per hour.

The wide format printers are most frequently manufactured in Korea and China with India starting to develop printers as well. These machines are available from 0.9 meters to 3 meters wide. Normally they are capable of printing from 10 to 60 square meters per hour.

Digital printing refers to the method of printing from a digital-based image directly to a variety of media. The greatest difference between digital printing and traditional methods such as lithography, flexography, gravure, or letterpress is that there is no need to replace printing plate in digital printing.
