An idea close to the construction of a slide rule was expressed at the beginning of the 17th century by the English astronomer Edmund Gunter; he suggested putting a logarithmic scale on the ruler and using two compasses perform operations with logarithms (addition and subtraction). In the 1620s, the English mathematician Edmund Wingate improved the "Hunter scale" by introducing two additional scales. At the same time (1622), William Otred, who is considered the author of the first logarithmic line, published his version of the line, not much different from the modern one, in the treatise "Circles of Proportions". At first, the line of the Habit was circular, but in 1633 a description of the rectangular ruler was published, with reference to the Habit,. Priority Otreda for a long time disputed by Richard Delamein, who probably independently implemented the same idea.

Further improvements were reduced to the appearance of the second movable ruler - “engine” (Robert Bissaker, 1654 and Seth Patridge, 1657), the marking of both sides of the ruler (also Bissaker), the addition of two “Wingate scales”, the mark on the scales of frequently used numbers (Thomas Everard, 1683). The runner appeared in the middle of the XIX century (A. Mannheim).
