Sherman MK VC Firefly 3d model originally modeled in cinema4D 16. Detailed enough for close-up renders.

The emergence of Firefly is inextricably linked with the activities of two enthusiasts: Major George Brayty and Lieutenant Colonel George Witheridge, who served in the fire training school of the Royal Armored Corps in Lulworth, Dorset.

George Brighty was the first to decide to install the "17-pound" in Sherman.

Despite the fact that in early 1943, the Challenger had already passed the initial firing at the Lulworth range, Brayty was entrenched in the thought that it was Sherman that was the best platform for a 17-pound cannon. He was embarrassed only by the fact that the tower of the American tank was too small: the internal volume could not accommodate the length of the recoil of the gun. Brighty solved the problem in an original way. His idea was that the gun should be firmly fixed in the gun mask, while the return would be compensated not by the recoil system, but by the entire mass of the tank. Acting on his own initiative, Brighty managed to get the Sherman, on which he was going to test his idea. It was at this stage that he was joined by Lieutenant Colonel Witheridge, who was sent to Lulworth after returning from the United States. The fate of the lieutenant colonel should be described in more detail.

Shortly before the war, John Witheridge served at the Lulworth Fire Training School, being a colleague of Brighty, but then was sent to North Africa. By May 1942, Witheridge had commanded a company "C" of the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment, the first to receive American medium tanks, Grant. In the battle for Ghazalu, “Grant” Witheridge was shot down, and he himself was seriously wounded. The lieutenant colonel who recovered from his wounds, as an armament specialist, was sent to Egypt to the Middle East fire training school. In January 1943, Witherside was invited by the Americans to Fort Knox as an adviser who had combat experience in using American tanks. While in the United States, the lieutenant colonel was fascinated by the potential of American tanks, and especially by the Sherman.

In June 1943, Witheridge returned from the United States and was sent to Lulworth. Upon arrival, Witheridge examined the Challenger and found a lot of flaws in it. Having learned about Major Brayt's undertaking, the lieutenant colonel offered him his assistance in the implementation of the project, although he found the Major’s idea very bold.

During the first trial shooting of the gun, which was rigidly mounted in the turret, for the safety reasons, Wyzerid was at first outside the tank, making the first three shots by means of a trigger cord. After it became clear that the shots did not lead to dangerous destruction, Witheridge climbed into the tower and conducted a series of seven shots, which also ended successfully. Despite the successful shooting of guns, Witherition advised Major Bryty to continue work on the recoil system for the benefit of the crews of the tanks.

Shortly after the test, the armored vehicle design department sent a directive to Lulworth, ordering that all work on the Sherman armed with a 17-pound gun be stopped. Witheridge used all his connections in the higher military circles to prevent the closure of the project. The lieutenant colonel managed to lobby the project at the Ministry of Supply, after which he received official status. Obtaining the status of a ministerial project led to the fact that the project was taken from the hands of enthusiasts and transferred into the hands of professional designers.
