The appearance of the following variant Pz.III is connected with the attempt to install the Pz.IV Ausf.G tank turret on the Ausf.J with a long-barreled 75-mm cannon. But the tower from the "four" in the body of the "troika" did not fit the width, so they began to produce a new series of tanks with the same weapons. From June to December 1942, 519 tanks of the L modification were manufactured. The tanks received a modernized mask installation, which simultaneously served as a counterweight to the 50-mm cannon. The frontal armor was again reinforced with a 20-mm slab that had cutouts for the driver’s observation devices and a course machine gun. The inspection hatch of the gun loading in the armoring and the observation gaps in the sides of the turret were eliminated. The mass of the tank increased to 22.7 tons. Machines destined for the African Corps received a more powerful engine cooling system. In addition, the air for him came from the crew compartment through reinforced air filters. The number of hatches in the super-engine roof was also reduced. One Ausf.L empirically armed a 50-mm anti-tank gun PaK 38.
