The Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) assault gun was Germany‘s most produced armoured fighting vehicle during World War II. It was built on the chassis of the proben Panzer III tank. Initially intended as a mobile, armoured light gun for infantry support, the StuG was continually modified and was widely employed as a tank destroyer.

Stug III or Sturgmgeschutz III was Germany’s 2nd most manufactured fully tracked armoured vehicle during World War II. Its basic design was built on the chassis of Panzer III tank, whereas the turret was replaced with a destructive armoured. It was mounted with a more powerful gun than its earlier versions. This model has emerged as the mobile assault gun for direct and instant fire support for the infantry. The Stug III was continuously modified and later on its last version was jagdtiger the heaviest tank destroyer on the planet.

The origin of Stug III was taken from German’s experiences in World War I. The Nazi army gave instructions to build these giant destroyers in 1942. Daimler AG was the one who used the Panzer III medium tank’s chassis with its running gear as a base for the new vehicle. There were five prototypes that were produced in 1937 on the Panzer III Ausf.B chassis.

The Stug III was fitted with the Maybach HL120 TRM V-12 gasoline engine driving six-speed transmission. It was able to produce 300 PS with 296 HP/221 kW. The power was equally distributed in 12PS (9.2 kW)/ Tonne. The suspension was of Torsion bar. It was also able to attain a speed of 40 km/h. The armour was containing 1 x 7.92mm MG34 machine gun.
