Glock 17 (Glock 17) is an Austrian gun developed by Glock for the needs of the Austrian Army. He became the first model of weapons developed by this company. The resulting sample was quite successful and convenient for use, which later it was adopted by the Army of Austria under the designation P80. Due to its combat qualities and reliability, it has become widespread as a civilian self-defense weapon. The Glock Company makes modifications to this pistol in various versions under different cartridges, for example: 9 x 19 mm Parabellum Glock 19, .40 S & W - Glock 22, 10mm Auto - Glock 20, .357 SIG - Glock 31, .45 ACP - Glock 36 and .45 GAP - Glock 37.

The pistol design feature is the absence of a fuse and chicken flag. The pistol is mostly made of high-strength, heat-resistant (up to 200 ° C) plastic. Thanks to this, Glock 17 is lightweight and extremely durable. The principle of action - "snatch and shoot", there is no fuse, but the shot will not occur without the full pressing of the trigger "safe action". It consists of 33 parts, and an incomplete disassembly takes place in seconds.

History of occurrence
After the end of the Second World War, the Austrian armed forces had two major models of Colt M1911A1 and Walther P38 guns. The Austrian police were equipped with Walther PP and Walther PPK military and even pre-war years of release or released in the postwar years under a license in France. In order to resolve the situation in 1980, it was decided to announce a competition for a new gun to equip the Austrian police and army.

The following requirements were put forward to the contestants:

type of ammunition: 9 × 19 mm Parabellum;
the minimum capacity of the store: 8 rounds;
the ability to control the pistol with the right and left hand;
fast bringing into combat position (without the need to switch the fuse);
the possibility of assembling and disassembling without special equipment, the number of parts in a pistol - no more than 58;
all parts must be interchangeable within the same model without mutual adjustment;
for 10 000 shots there should be no more than 20 delays;
the gun should maximally maintain integrity and functionality when exposed to external influences and temperature fluctuations;
maximum safety for the user: the shot should not occur when hit on a steel plate after falling from a height of 2 meters.
In the fight for such a promising order took part in various weapons manufacturers. Among them was a little-known at that time firm Glock, founded in 1963 in the town of Deutsche Wagram, located near Vienna. At that time the company was engaged in the production and supply of sapper blades, bayonet knives, belts and various ammunition for the Austrian army. In the middle of the 1970s, Gaston Glock, the founder and owner of the company, put his designers in charge of creating the most simple, efficient and reliable pistol.

Using the existing experience with the use of polymers in the production of weapons, Glock 17 was created. The fundamental innovation of this model was the widespread use in its construction of polymeric materials, mainly impact resistant polyamide was used. In 1982, based on the results of military tests, the Glock 17 gun was adopted by the Austrian Army under the designation P. 80. Firm Glock was commissioned 25,000 pistols, production capacity was not ready for such a significant order, so until the full deployment of its own production capacity was engaged subcontractors. Shortly after the arrival of a new pistol in the troops, this model became very popular, prompting Glock to further expand and refine the model range, but based on the design of existing models of pistols of this company, still remain those successful technical solutions that were first successfully used in development of Glock 17 gun.

Its name "Glock 17", the pistol, most likely, is obliged to serial number (No. 17) package of technical drawings of the company, as a result of acceptance for production.
