The CR.32 3D model formed the central core of the Legionary Aviation, Italian expeditionary body that participated in the Spanish Civil War on the side of the nationalist side from 1936, being known as " Chirri ". More than 400 devices were used during the war as of August 1936. CR.32 would fit into the groups Gamba di Ferro ( Iron leg ), Cucaracha, Asso di Bastoni ( Ace of clubs ), Frecce ( Arrows ) and Baleari ( Baleares), as well as in the Spanish units 2-G-3 and 3-G-3.
The Fiat CR.32 proved to be a dangerous rival for more modern fighters, such as the Soviets Polikarpov I-15 and Polikarpov I-16, which operated in the Republican ranks, since their maneuverability allowed them to come out victorious from combats with swifter enemies and better armed. The Italian aviators obtained some 300 victories with loss of 73 own devices in combat. Once the war was over, the CR.32 remained in Spain, becoming the embryonic nucleus of the Spanish air forces during the postwar period.
