The Mercedes-Benz W123 was one of the company's successful cars, but by the mid-1980s the situation had changed dramatically: buyers needed a car that could not only get from point A to point B, but it would be affordable and stylish. The appearance of the 190 in 1982 insulated the W123, which had no prestige of the W126 S-Class, nor the sportiness of the 190th. Therefore, the designer of both cars, Bruno Sacco, immediately embarked on the development of a new mid-class car, and on November 1984 the car was ready. For her time, she had one of the best aerodynamics indicators.

In 1997, the first technological breakthrough occurred due to the replacement of old row six-cylinder engines with new aluminum V6 from the EBU to the E280 and E320. In the same year, the diesel E300 Diesel was replaced by the E300 Turbodiesel. In 1998, the release of E230 and E420 versions were completed, the latter replaced the E430. In addition, there was a second technical revolution - new diesel engines with Common Rail installed on models such as the E200 CDI and the E220 CDI (replaced by the E220 Diesel).
The car caused a lot of controversy around its appearance and was sold a bit worse than its predecessors: in the seven years, it was made about 1.3 million cars.
