The FlaK 30 ( Flugabwehrkanone 30 ) and it's upgraded version - the FlaK 38, were two 20mm antiaircraft guns used by the armed forces of Nazi Germany during World War II. It was the main air defense weapon used by the Germans and was produced in a variety of models, the most famous being the Flakvierling 38 which combined four FlaK 38s into one weapon.
Even when the FlaK 30 went into service, the Luftwaffe and the Army had doubts about its efficiency, given the increasing speed at low altitudes of the bomber fighters. The Army believed that the solution would be to manufacture 37mm caliber weapons they had been developing since the 1920s, with a firing range similar to that of the FlaK 38 but firing a projectile almost eight times the volume. Not only did this cause the projectile to hit the target more efficiently or more destructively, but it eventually allowed the bullet to move at greater distances.
20mm guns have always been a kind of tentative measure, with frequent updates being made just to keep them useful. It was indeed a surprise when Rheinmetall was able to innovate and develop the 2 cm Flakvierling 38, which made this aerial artillery model competitive again with increasingly lethal models.
