The drive shaft is a component of automotive technology . It is used to transfer power between the gearbox and the driven wheel and is part of the powertrain.

To follow the compression movements and the steering angle, joints are present, which is why the generic term PTO shaft is used. For steered wheels, however, especially homokinetic drive shafts are used.

To protect the joints, cuffs made of rubber and TPE are increasingly pulled over the joints and filled with grease.

In normal cars, drive shafts are designed for the life of the vehicle and are the break points in the powertrain during the pop-start test . Damage will occur if the cuffs have been damaged. In the typical damage picture, especially on the front vehicle doors, grease marks appear, which are thrown out of the cracked cuff when the steering wheel is fully engaged. Penetrating water emulsifies with the fat; Dirt also causes wear on the sliding surfaces of the joint. Signs of incipient damage can also be crackling noises during load changes.
