Arches first appeared in the II millennium BC. e. in the architecture of the Ancient East (for example, the ancient Egyptian architecture), in particular in Ancient Mesopotamia, where the construction of brick structures reached a high level. Widespread also arches in the architecture of ancient Rome.
Mechanics
The arch is a curvilinear bar of a smooth obris, bearing a building construction. In contrast to the beam, which is experiencing normal mechanical stress, the arch experiences a tangential mechanical stress, due to which a horizontal support reaction (thrust) occurs. The arch differs from the arch only in a much smaller width. Under the vertical load, the arch works more for compression and less for bending.
The arches are articulated, two-articulated and three-articulated; if the arch supporting ends are connected with a rod (a puff that perceives a horizontal reaction), then an arch with a puff is obtained.
