The Magney House is located on the pristine South Coast of New South Wales, about two hundred and fifty kilometers from Sydney, as heroic. Its beauty is, in particular, due to the scale of the open landscape where the eye may range across a very vast horizon. Also known as Bingie Farm, the Magney House was built between 1982 and 1984 at the Bingie Point, Moruya, on the New South Wales South Coast, Australia. The intention behind its design was to ideate a project which centered on the quality of the light, feeling of vulnerability, being in the open air, without a privileged front, where one could experience the forces of the elements like in a tent.
Architectural design in Australia takes some getting used to when all you’ve ever known is the Western designs from Europe and the United States. Perhaps that’s one reason why the Glenn Murcutt International Master Class is so popular. Forming an asymmetrical V-shape, the roof of the Magney House collects the Australian rainwater, which is recycled for drinking and heating. Also, the corrugated metal sheathing and interior brick walls insulate the home and help to conserve energy.
The Magney House is a good example of a contemporary costal residence that reflects the analytical process of the South Coast site landscape undertaken by the architect. The project expresses architect/’s interest in the need for harmony between man and nature, and highlights the importance of designing for the climate within a carefully detailed, logical structural system.
