Lady Justice is an allegory of moral strength in the judiciary. Her features are a blindfold, a balance, and a sword. Lady Justice comes from the personification of justice in Roman art known as Iustitia or Justitia equivalent to the Greek goddesses Themis and Dike.
Lady Justice’s origin was Iustitia, Roman mythology’s goddess of Justice. Emperor Augustus introduced Iustitia and was therefore not a very ancient deity in the Roman pantheon. Emperor Tiberius established the Temple of Iustitia in Rome on 8 January 13 BC.
Iustitia became a symbol of the virtue of justice that each emperor wanted to associate with his regime. Although formally called in Rome a goddess with her temple and religious shrine, it seems that from the beginning she was seen more as an artistic symbolic personification than as an actual deity of religious significance.
Most often, Lady Justice is portrayed with a set of scales usually hanging from one side, on which she judges the attributes of the support and opposition of a case.
