A bed is a piece of furniture used for sleeping, although it is also used for other activities: reading, sitting, resting, jumping, eating, playing, resting during periods of illness, watching television.
The beds are presented in a wide range of shapes and sizes. The first were little more than piles of straw or some other natural material that stretched at night on the ground and were collected during the day. An important advance was to elevate them to avoid floods, dirt, infections or snakebites.
The bed, which has its own form from the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Assyria , consists of an elongated rectangular frame, made of wood or metal, supported by raised feet and finished at one end or both in a headboard as a backrest, which usually adorned with figures.
According to some historians, the Greeks were the first to place a sort of headboard, more or less elevated, on the frame of the bed consisting of four sticks assembled, which made up the assemblies that held the bed itself.
The Persians , before the Greeks, had their beds with canopies and covered it with many tapestries. The canopies adorned them with embroidery, precious metals ( gold and silver ), ivory and pearls.
