A stent is a mesh tube used to treat fine arteries to open blocked arteries so that blood can flow smoothly in the body. A stent is fitted inserted into an artery via a tube known as a catheter. Stenting has been demonstrated to be superior to balloon angioplasty in de novo focal lesions located in large native vessels. But, in small vessels, benefit of stenting remains questionable. Stent implantation has become the major method of percutaneous myocardial revascularization.
Endovascular stents expand the arterial lumen more than balloon angioplasty and reduce rates of restenosis after coronary angioplasty in selected patients. Elective stent placement in small coronary arteries with focal de novo lesions is safe and associated with a marked reduction in restenosis rate and subsequent target lesion revascularization rate at 6 months.
Stents are specially designed mesh, metal tubes that are inserted into the body in a collapsed state on a catheter. They are expanded inside the vessel to prop the walls open. In some cases, a stent may have a synthetic fabric covering while a balloon catheter is a long, thin plastic tube with a tiny balloon at its tip. A stent is a small, wire mesh tube. Balloons and stents come in different sizes to match the size of the diseased artery.
