The Navy immediately withdrew the TBD from the frontline units after Midway. In any case, there were only 39 aircraft left. They stayed briefly in service in the Atlantic and squad training until 1944. The original prototype ended his career in the NAS Norman, Oklahoma, and the last in the US Navy was used by Commander Activities Air Fleet the West Coast. When his TBD was scrapped in November 1944, were not left. None survived the war and no one knows of the existence of anyone on the mainland at present.
To be fair to the model, the new Avenger TBFs were equally ineffective in 1942, losing five of the six planes at Midway. In the early part of the Pacific War, the poor performance of US torpedo boats was due to the vulnerability of the torpedo boats in general against anti-aircraft artillery and defense fighters, as well as the inexperience of the pilots and the lack of coverage coordinated air, as the serious defects of the torpedoes, which were not detected and corrected until the fall of 1943.
