Originally the US Air Force's XRM-91 Blue Scout Jr (Journeyman B), the rocket was the first of the Blue Scout family of rockets to take flight. The four stage space launch vehicle (SLV) was not powerful enough to place satellites in orbit, but was used for radiation and magnetic field measurements through the 1960s. NASA later omitted the 4th stage for a three stage configured research rocket.
