In 2005, Gulfstream Aerospace and IAI began developing a new aircraft, which was to change the model Gulfstream G200. In 2008, the assembly of the first aircraft, called the G250, began. The aircraft was fundamentally different from the model G200. New engines, a new cockpit and a new interior were installed on it. The wings and tail of the model were completely reworked by Gulfstream Aerospace engineers.
The launch of the project was announced in 2008. On December 11, 2009, the first flight of the Gulfstream G280 took place. The plane stayed in the air for three hours and twenty minutes, the tests took place at an altitude of 10,000 meters at a speed of 0.7 maha.
The G280 differed from the G200 in an enlarged cabin, new HTF7250G fuel efficient engines, a new T-tail, a new anti-icing system, 5 portholes were added to the cabin and the ability to access the luggage compartment during the flight. The cabin volume of the G280 has become more than that of the G200 and its competitors, the pressure has been increased and the noise level in the cabin has been reduced. The aircraft has the largest rear luggage compartment in the class (3.4 m³). Designers got rid of the fuel tank in the rear fuselage. All its fuel G280 carries in the wing, center section and ventral tube.
In 2011, the G250 was renamed G280 because “the G280 designation is a more appropriate order number in some cultures.”
In September 2012, the aircraft was fully certified.
Gulfstream G280 has collected more than 20 speed records set for certain pairs of cities in the world.
