In the beginning, it was not selected by the army, and then Bell redesigned the airframe and successfully sold the aircraft in the market as the five-place Bell 206A jet ranger. The new design fulfilled the army demand and eventually selected by the Army as the OH-58 Kiowa.
A total of 7,300 were built and the cost of one unit was $900,000 to $1.2 million. Later on, the bell also developed 7 place-long Ranger, which was offered as a Twin-engined option as twin ranger.
The development of this helicopter started on 14th October 1960. It was an American army demand for making Light Observation Helicopter (LOH). A total of 25 aircraft companies took participation in which bell and Hiller were chosen as the winner. In 1967 the production of heat ranger was started and still it is active.
