The most famous of all the company's products, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, designed by Alexander Kartveli, played a very significant role during World War II. It was chosen as a standard fighter aircraft of the United States Army in anticipation of the country entering the war, and of this model were built 15 677 copies before their production ceased, after canceling a series of open orders, to produce the Japanese surrender.

Like other large fighter planes, the P-47 received two nicknames. The first of them ("Jug", a diminutive of "Juggernaut " due to its considerable proportions) was assigned by its crew, while the second (" T-bolt ") was a simple contraction of its name official.

Heir of a saga that was born with the Seversky P-35 of Alexander Seversky will be perpetuated with the Republic P-43 Lancer and will be perfected with the planned P-44 of high benefits, the P-47 was the result of the indecision that gripped the USAAC in 1940 on whether to build light or heavy fighters. The plans to commission the Republic-AP-4 and AP-10 redesignated light fighter projects respectively XP-47 and XP-47A were canceled when analyzing the reports on the aerial fights taking place on the Western Front. Kartvelian then outlined his proposals for a heavy fighter that would meet the new requirements, basing his concept on the use of the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp turbocharged engine and obtaining a contract for an XP-47B prototype derived from its design.
