The development of the Audi TT began on September 1994 at the Audi Design Center in California. For the first time, TT was shown as a concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1995. The design was entrusted to Jay Mace, Freeman Thomas, and Martin Smith, who developed a successful interior design. Adaptation to a previously unused seamless laser welding for the 1st generation TT delayed the release of the car.
Production of the model is adjusted in two stages. At the plant in the city of Ingolstadt (Germany), bodies (chassis) are produced, which are then shipped to the city of Gyor (Hung. Győr) (Hungary) at the plant of Audi Hungaria Motor Kft. Audi initially did not include an automatic gearbox in the options list. The 6-speed automatic transmission converter became available in 2002, and the DSG (S-Tronic) became available later in 2003.
The next-generation car, Audi TT Coupe (8J) was introduced in 2005 at the Tokyo Motor Show.
