No other modern main battle tank (MBT) had such a good reputation in the western world as the tank Leopard 2. The tank, developed in the 70s of the last century, is still in service with many armies in the world. After the reduction of the Western armies, a large number of Leopard 2 tanks became available on the global arms market. The most common option in use today is the Leopard 2A4, which came into service in 1985.

Although modern technologists were partially tested on the Leopard 2, they were partially available, it should be considered as a “deservedly fighting horse”. Nearly 3,300 tanks were manufactured, but production lines are currently closed. Almost all the latest developments are aimed at additional booking and an increase in ammunition. What is missing today is a holistic view of how Leopard 2 will be used in the next 20 years, which technologies will be available and which will be in demand. And it may be time for a new project of the tower or building, and perhaps the machine as a whole.

In the 60s of the last century, Germany and the United States were seriously engaged in the development of the new modern battle tank MBT70. Unfortunately, the project showed that the expectations and requirements regarding technology and bilateral cooperation were not entirely satisfied by both parties. This put Germany and the United States in a situation where they did not have a modern machine that could withstand modern Soviet tanks. It was unacceptable for that time. Since the signed contracts did not allow both countries to carry out parallel development of the new tank, Germany chose Porsche to study the possibility of upgrading the Leopard 1 battle tank in the future. The purpose of the study was to collect data and theoretically evaluate the validity of the upgrades and their practical implementation.

The final report submitted by Porsche covered all the component parts of a modern battle tank. It included the following items.

Fire control system: The use of an integrated MSA with stabilization and sights for the commander and gunner, including a night sight. In addition, the camera mounted on the telescopic mast at the rear of the turret should be extended in order to obtain an excellent all-round view.

Armament: Installation of an automatic cannon in parallel with the main weapon for use as an auxiliary weapon, as well as a remote-controlled machine gun for air defense tasks. It was also proposed to change the rear part of the body in order to increase the sector of the cannon firing. In addition, the feasibility of installing an automatic loader for the main gun and placing ammunition in the hull and turret was considered.

Powerplant: Installing an engine capacity of 1100 hp and new transmissions. This would allow to transfer the cooling system to the stern of the hull and install suction fans instead of the forcing.

Suspension system: The planned improvements related to the course of the springs and ground clearance. In addition, the drive wheel was proposed to move back, which would increase the amount of cash for the power plant.

Protection: Focus on optimizing the front of the turret, rearranging the stern of the turret and using new armor steels.

The proposed areas of upgrades developed under the Gilded Leopard program were assessed as expedient and some were even implemented as part of subsequent projects.
