The Sd.Kfz. 251 half-track was an armored fighting vehicle designed and first built by the Hanomag company during World War II. There were four main model modifications (Ausführung A through D), which formed the basis for at least 22 variants.
The initial idea was for a vehicle that could be used to transport a single squad of panzergrenadiers to the battlefield protected from enemy small arms fire, and with some protection from artillery fire.
The first two models were produced in small numbers from 1939. A and B models can be identified by the structure of the nose armor, which comprised two trapezoids - the lower of which had a cooling hatch.

SD.KFZ 251/1 Ausf.B – Hanomag Halftruck was a Germans World war II armored fighting vehicle, which was designed by Hanomag Company. The design and structure were based on its earlier version Sd.kfz.11. This killing machine was designed to carry German infantry into the battle. It was the most produced half-truck of Germany with the no of at least 15,252 vehicles. It was commonly referred to as Hanomag.

Initially, the motto of its designer was to transport a single squad of 10 panzer grenadiers to the battlefield, so that they can safely reach their planned locations. It was able to protect the occupants from small arms fires and artillery fires. The SD.KFZ 251/1 Ausf.B – Hanomag Halftruck was mounted with MG 34 or MG 42 machine guns, which allowed the vehicle to fire suppressively to the enemy.

It was carrying one Maybach HL42 6-cylinder petrol engine producing 100 PS (99 hp, 74 kW) easily. The operational range of this vehicle was 300 km, whereas it was able to crawl with a speed of 52.5 km/h. The early model was introduced in 1939 and issued to the 1st panzer division.
