A gazebo is a pavilion with a symmetrical plan, usually hexagonal or circular, commonly found in parks, gardens, and open public areas. The gazebos are isolated, roofed, and open on all sides; they provide shade, a shelter of basic characteristics, ornamental function in a landscape, and a place of rest.
It is also usually called gazebos in commercial architecture to exempt bodies that serve vertical communication or evacuation exit of parking.
The origin of the term is unknown since there are no cognates in other European languages. In its original use in French and English gardens, the word appears in English in 1752 . The gazebos were located to enjoy a view, so much so that the hypothesis is emitted that its etymology could come from the French that c'est beau ("how beautiful") or from the Latin macarrónico gazebo ("I will look"). However, it is more likely to derive from the Arabic word kasbah or qasaba, same origin as the Spanish Alcazaba.
Of the primitive examples of garden pavilions, only those that were built more solidly have survived. The pavilions that a later generation may have called gazebos are the "garden houses" in the Montacute House. Some gazebos in public parks are large enough to serve as Templates.
The gazebos can also have screens on their sides to protect themselves from insects and these can be constructed of different materials. Some tent- style gazebos do not use any type of traditional construction material, but only posts and stretched fabrics, usually nylon. While they offer little protection from the elements, they provide shade along with largely unobstructed views and have recently gained in popularity due to the growing concern regarding the mosquito transmitter of West Nile Virus.
