Tenements (also called tenement houses) are urban residence occupied by impoverished families. They are apartment houses that barely meet or fail to meet the minimum standards of safety, sanitation, and comfort. It is a multi-occupancy building of any sort.
The term tenement originally referred to tenancy and therefore to any rented accommodation. Any house, building, or portion thereof, which is rented, leased, let, or hired out to be occupied or is occupied as the home or residence of more than three families living independently of one another and doing their own cooking upon the premises, or by more than two families upon a floor, so living and cooking and having a common right in the halls, stairways, yards, water-closets, or privies, or some of them.
It was five to six stories high building. On each floor it had four apartments. Just to maximize the number of renters, builders wasted little space. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries only the poor people and immigrants, who mainly lived in tenement houses. These tenement houses were poorly maintained, overcrowded apartments, in large buildings, usually in the poor sections of a large city.
