When speaking of Parisian architecture, the term "Haussmann" comes to mind immediately. But if everyone knows the word, the criteria that define a typical building of the period of Baron Haussmann are less known.

Regulated by draconian specifications, the architecture of that time had to respect a number of extremely strict parameters. And with more than 40,000 housing units built during this period, these buildings now represent around 60% of the capital's buildings! To help you recognize a Haussmannian building during your walks, find the main characteristics of this typically Parisian architecture.

The facade is the essential element of the Haussmannian style. Private buildings must respect the same height as well as the same main lines of the facade to form a single architectural ensemble. The height, varying from 12 to 20 meters, must be proportional to the width of the road, without ever exceeding 6 floors.

There are 3 classes of Haussmann buildings: The first class comprises four square floors of large apartments with stables and sheds in the courtyard. The second class is on 5 floors and has a service staircase. The 3rd class are also on 5 floors, with smaller apartments and no service stairs.

Faced with the growing discontent of architects who will see their creativity broken in Haussmann's specifications, the rules will be lightened from the 1880s, favoring the emergence of an exuberant and free current: Art Nouveau.

You will also be able to appreciate rue Réaumur, pierced in 1900 for several kilometers, a typical architecture of transition between the Haussmann style and the more modern movements.
