Chrysler Building 3D model, New York City
Chrysler Building - Chrysler Corporation skyscraper, built in 1930, one of the symbols of New York. The 320-meter-high (1046-foot) building is located in the east of Manhattan at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue. For 11 months in the years 1930-1931, the building was the highest in the world.
Originally owned by Chrysler Corporation, it is currently jointly owned by the Abu Dhabi Investment Council (90%) and Tishman Speyer Properties (10%).
The building is an example of Art Deco architecture. The peculiar ornamentation of the tower repeats the motives of the design of caps on the wheels of the Chrysler cars of the time. This is one of the best examples of the Art Deco period in the architecture of New York, the most beautiful period in the development of the city.
The hall is unusually elegant, and at the top of the building was a viewing platform, replaced a few years later by a restaurant. But all these enterprises stopped paying off when the Great Depression began, and the former observation platform was turned into a private Cloud Club, from where you could see all of New York. The uppermost levels of the building are narrow with low ceilings, they were created primarily for viewing outside and used for radio equipment and other mechanical and electrical equipment.
At one time, the building was criticized for its “frivolous” design, which departed from direct and functional modernism. For example, there are huge silver statues in the form of eagles above. But in general, the public accepted the building with admiration and enthusiasm and even gave nicknames, one of which was “The Beauty of Manhattan”. Over time, the Chrysler skyscraper was recognized by many as the highest architectural expression of the 1920s era.
In 2005, the New York City Skyscrapers Museum surveyed hundreds of architects, brokers, builders, critics, developers, engineers, historians, lawyers, government officials, property owners, planners and schoolchildren with a request to compile the ten most beloved skyscrapers of the city. The Chrysler Building ranked first in this survey.
