The M4 Sherman, formally Medium Tank M4, was the primary tank used by the United States during
World War II. The Sherman evolved from the Grant and Lee Medium tanks, which had an unusual side-sponson mounted 75 mm gun. It retained much of the previous mechanical design, but added the first American main 75 mm gun mounted on a fully traversing turret, with agyrostabilizer enabling the crew to fire with reasonable accuracy while the tank was on the move.
The M4 Sherman was the famous fighting vehicle (Tank) of US and it’s allied in WW2. It was produced in several variants like one: M4A1, M4A2 M4A3 M4A4, M4A5 M4A6 etc. One of the most used versions of this tank was the 75mm gun-equipped M4A3 Sherman equipped with 90 rounds, which used a V8 450hp Ford engine. This version was also equipped with wet ammo storage bins, which helped prevent internal fires, a weakness of earlier Shermans.
The first run of M4 A3 tanks were with small hatch tanks made by Ford, most were used in the USA for training, and many never saw combat. The late production version first rolled out of the factories in February 1944 with an angled front hull and 63.5mm armored plate. These are the rarest version of the M4A3 Sherman in Europe, but they are pretty common around the midwest as monument tanks. This version of the Sherman was the assault Sherman, though not expressly designed for it, was manufactured to be able to lead a column up a road and take a few hits from German AT guns or tanks so they could be spotted without having to sacrifice the tank. The M4A3 was the preferred US Army Tank during the WW2.
M4A3(75)D – M4A3 with 75mm M3 gun, earlier 57° glacis with dry ammunition storage. Manufactured by Ford Motor Company and reserved mostly for training units in the USA. After 1945, many were remanufactured and sent to ETO to make up shortages due to 1944 losses of M4 Mediums.
M4A3(75)W – M4A3 with 75mm M3 gun. 47° glacis with large drivers’ hatches. Shifted ammunition lockers to hull floor in water-glycol jacketed lockers to decrease risk of fire.
